Typical Range Officer's Brief for The Gallery Range.

Good morning/afternoon. My name is.............I am your Range Officer.

The firing times will be 0900 - 1530 The range is to be cleared by 16.00.

Every one intending to use the range has to sign to say that they have read Part B of Range Orders. If you have not signed you are not allowed to shoot.

After this briefing you will be divided into two details. One detail will be the butt party whilst the other detail shoots and then the details will change over. These details will stay together throughout the day.

PARKING

All vehicles must be parked in the designated roped parking area. All vehicles will have to be moved behind the 600 yard point later in the day.

STRANGERS

If you come across someone who is obviously a stranger please treat that person with courtesy and direct him/her to the Range Officer.

SAFETY

The Medical Officer for today is............

Your vehicles are the primary safety zones, you kit up and sort out your rifles within the confines of your vehicle.

Your rifle must be in a clearly safe condition at all times until you are on the firing point and have been given the order to load. Safe condition means - bolt and magazine removed , or bolt open, magazine removed, with breech flag clearly showing. Better still your rifle should be in a slip or case with bolt open and magazine removed until you are on the firing point

If it is necessary for you to handle any rifle when not in your vehicle or on the firing line you must seek my permission.

If you are seen to be handling a rifle in anyway that might be considered to constitute a danger to yourself or others you will be sent off the range. Therefore, you will not, fiddle with, demonstrate, dry fire, clean, adjust sights of, wave around or show off any rifle behind the firing line or in the car park.

ON THE FIRING POINT:

Please be ready when called to the line.

Do not put any kit on the line until I give the order.

When you have been instructed to move forward and place your kit on the line and rifles have been uncased they are to remain pointing down range until they have been cleared by me.

Ear defenders or suitable earplugs will be worn.

Loaded magazines or single rounds are not to be inserted into your rifle until you are given the order to load.

Once the order to load has been given and magazines have been inserted the 50 mil rule comes into effect. ((The maximum elevation for this range is 50 mils. This means 2" above the horizontal.)) Essentially this requires you to keep the barrel horizontal to the line of fire - parallel to the ground. This is to prevent rounds going over the top of the butt stop. Therefore any action, such as adjusting slings or sights or taking up your firing position, which causes the barrel to move above the horizontal or move from side to side must be carried out with the bolt clearly open and no round in the breech - preferably with the breech flag inserted.

As soon as you have fired you will open the bolt and eject the empty case before you do anything else.

If you have any type of stoppage you will keep your rifle pointing down range observing the 50 mil rule and raise your arm to attract my attention.

If you have a misfire you are to wait thirty seconds with the rifle pointing down range observing the 50 mil rule. Then keeping your face well clear of the breech you are to eject the round and hand it to me. You are not to attempt to re-fire the round.

Do not shoot across lanes.

If I blow the WHISTLE or shout "STOP! STOP! STOP!" you must IMMEDIATELY CEASE FIRING AND CLEAR YOUR RIFLE and wait for orders.

If you see an unsafe situation shout "STOP! STOP! STOP!" to halt firing and to attract my attention.

When you have finished firing you are not to leave the line until your rifle has been cleared by me and you have reported the number of rounds fired. When instructed to you are to pick up all your empty cases and clear the line as quickly as possible.

All non-firing personnel are to remain behind the firing point and wear hearing protection.

Novice shooters are to shoot with an experienced instructor who will be responsible for that novice shooter maintaining all the specified safety rules.

((AT THE END OF THE DAY'S SHOOTING the butt party will ensure that the butts are left clean and tidy to the Range Warden's satisfaction. i.e all stray patches picked up. The butt party will then unship and load the targets on to the transport.

The final shooting detail will ensure that the firing point is clear of all empty cases and other debris and the range is left tidier than found..

Please pick up any rubbish found.))

I will now read you Part B of Range Orders
